Stroganoff the New Year Correctly with a Ukrainian Favorite! 1024 785 Cooking Aboard with Jill

In my January 2023 Newsletter I wrote about our visit to the Bavarian styled town of Leavenworth here in Washington State.  I guess this has now become a tradition as Dave and I are heading back to this lovely town in the Cascade Mountains next week for some snowshoeing and delicious German food.  That should explain how I chose my header and footer photographs.

This month’s recipe is a winter classic, and it is Beef Stroganoff.  Many families I know love to serve this in the wintertime.  But what I wanted to know was the history of this recipe.  This is a popular dish from Russia, and it is named after Count Alexander Grigorievich Stroganoff.  He lived in the late 19th century in Odessa which is now in a populous city in the Ukraine.  Count Stroganoff had a French chef who invented this for him because his teeth were no longer strong enough to chew large pieces of meat.  The tenderness of this dish certainly explains the history!

Dave and I wish you a happy beginning to 2024!
