Here are some of my favorite places to buy groceries and beverages in Newark, Delaware:
Herman’s Quality Meat is a butcher and one of a kind. They are a full-service meat market buying their stock from local farms. The quality is fantastic and my go to place for an all-natural, grass fed turkey that I use at Thanksgiving. I purchase veal, pork, beef and chicken from them all year around. And I especially like the fresh produce also acquired from local farms. www.hermansqualitymeats.com
Chef’s Haven is a gourmet grocery store in the neighboring town of Hockessin, Delaware. The owner is Chef Mark Eastman and he bakes homemade baguettes and other breads every day. He also has an amazing selection of cheeses and other delectable items. I have taken several cooking classes at his store and it’s a wonderful culinary experience. I think my favorite recipe so far is his Ratatouille where he sautéed garlic, onion, eggplant, red pepper, tomatoes and zucchini in olive oil and seasonings. www.chefshavende.com
Deerfield Wines is located just up the street from home and my first choice to purchase wine and other libations. Dean is the owner and is very knowledgeable about wines and paring them with food. I favor an Austrian white wine that I purchase there called Gruner Veltliner from Hugl Weine. www.deerfieldwines.com
Newark Natural Foods Co-op is a perfect go to for fresh produce, bulk spices and olive oil as well as fresh dairy products. They host weekly farmers market where local farmers sell their produce. The coop is also a helpful place to find gluten or dairy free groceries for people, such as myself, who have those challenges. www.newarknaturalfoods.com
Harry and David is a favorite store of mine. They started business in 1910 in Medford, Oregon as a premium fruit company specializing in pears from their orchards. They since have become a popular source of food, gift baskets and flowers. You can order their products online at www.harryanddavid.com. You can make a very easy appetizer by mixing a jar of their Pepper & Onion relish with a brick of cream cheese. And if I am not making my cranberry dish from scratch at Thanksgiving, I use their Country Cranberry relish (with orange and walnuts) as it is delicious.
