This month I am featuring two recipes that are corn based. The first is my favorite Fair food which is Corn Dogs. I love corn dogs because of the crunch of the cornmeal coating and the sausage or hot dog in the middle. It is a fun handheld snack! My second recipe comes from the low country of South Carolina. It is Cheesy Shrimp and Grits.
So, what is the origin of the corn dog? This is a disputed answer because there are variations of corn dogs all over the world. But it does seem that the American corn dog is the most popular. German immigrants in Texas, that were sausage makers by trade, have been given a great deal of credit. Sometime in between 1938 and 1942 “Corny Dogs” were introduced to the State Fair of Texas. I think this fun and delicious treat is perfect for such occasions as game night or picnics.
Earlier this month, I made a return visit to one of my favorite American cities, which is Charleston, South Carolina. In 2013, Dave and I sailed down the Intercoastal Waterway and lived in the Holy City at the Charleston City marina for 6 months. I have not been back since that huge and wonderful adventure. I am happy to report that the peninsula is doing very well.
You can’t really have a favorite restaurant in Charleston as it is a culinary destination. But one of my favorites is S.N.O.B. or Slightly North of Broad. Broad Street runs north and south in Charleston. SNOB is located on East Bay Street just three blocks away and they do a great job with their version of shrimp and grits. This classic southern dish has been said to originate in Charleston more than 70 years ago. Local fresh shrimp were fried in bacon grease along with onions and green peppers and served with grits for breakfast.
